Sia antique sia ancient significano “antico”, però con sfumature diverse. Antique si usa quasi esclusivamente per oggetti d'antiquariato o di un certo valore: antique furniture, mobili d'antiquariato. La parola che esprime l'idea di antichità in generale è, invece, ancient, che si utilizza per parlare della storia antica, di un palazzo antico e di tutto ciò che è semplicemente molto vecchio: ancient history, storia antica.
